Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m currently obsessed with Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey (Lorde too, but we’ll save that for another post). Therefore Miley’s cover of Lana’s “Summertime Sadness” made me smile.
Most of you will know the song Summertime Sadness because of the Cedric Gervais remix, which I’ve also included below. Interestingly enough, according to Rolling Stone, Summertime Sadness gained most of it’s recent success because of this remix, which accounted for 512,000 of the hit’s 1.1 million downloads.
The powerful lyrics from Lana Del Rey’s 2012 song, including “Think I’ll miss you forever/ Like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky/ Later’s better than never/ Even if you’re gone, I’m going to try.”, rang true to how I felt about someone I had met that previous summer and ever since that song has had a special place in my heart, partly because of the imagery used by Lana in telling the tale of a summer of love and adventure ending in heartbreak.
